Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) is Miss J. Cunningham

Our Governors responsible for SEN, Inclusion and Pupil Premium are Mrs R. Comerford and Mrs J. Tunningley

At Huby School we aim to respond sensitively, quickly and appropriately to any pupils who may need special educational provision and all children are valued equally. The school aims to cater for all children within the classroom, including those who may require additional support.

Children are deemed to have special educational needs if they:

  •  have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of their age – and/or
  • have a disability which either prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities which are generally provided in schools for children of their age.

Support may take the form of individual or group tuition and may be provided from within school or from outside agencies. Time is often allocated on the recommendations of the school Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), Class Teacher, Special Education Advisory Service, Educational Psychologist, or Speech Therapist.

The school has adopted the most recent Code of Practice in relation to children with special needs, which recognises the special needs of children and young people from 0 – 25 years.

The Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service, North Yorkshire (SENDIASS North Yorkshire) works with parents, carers children or young people that live within the county. It is a free confidential and impartial information, advice and support service that must be arm’s length to all other services including the Local Authority. This service is specifically for children and young people from 0-25 years with special educational needs and / or disabilities, their parents and carers. There is information for professionals and a professionals referral form on their website that can be completed. Parents, carers and young people can speak to a trained coordinator on our advice line or make contact through our email or Facebook. They have virtual surgeries that can be booked to talk to a coordinator for a half an hour session.

We value the importance of good communication between parents/carers and school and as such parents/carers are consulted at all times through informal discussions with the class teacher through our open door policy and more formal regular review meetings every term.  North Yorkshire PACT is a voluntary organisation run by parents/carers that supports children with additional needs.

Please see the Graduated Provision Map by Area of Need which outlines SEN provision at Huby School. Each child with SEND needs also has an individual provision map. This information helps to explain how we meet the needs of all children in school. Please also read our Accessibility Plan

If you would like to speak to the school SENCO please contact the school to make an appointment. Our SENCo Miss Jane Cunningham (maternity cover). The governor SEN link is Mrs Kath Wood.
