A small school with a big heart

Huby Church of England (VC) Primary School is a small, welcoming school at the heart of the village of Huby, around 10 miles north of York.

We may be a small school, but we have big ambitions for every child.

Huby is a place where children are known as individuals. Where older children look out for younger ones. Where friendships cross year groups. Where children are encouraged to have a voice, try new things, ask questions and discover what they are capable of.

Our Christian vision, Shining Together Through Courage, Connection and Curiosity, is at the heart of our school community. We want every child to feel that they belong, that they are valued and that they have something special to contribute.

A place to belong

Our five mixed-age classes create a strong sense of community:

•  Robins – Nursery and Reception
• Kingfishers – Years 1 and 2
• Owls – Years 3 and 4
• Sparrowhawks- Year 5
• Red Kites- Year 6

Being a small school means that children quickly get to know one another and develop relationships with adults and children across the school. We encourage our pupils to care for one another, celebrate each other's successes and recognise the responsibility they have towards their school community.

One of the ways we bring this to life is through our Red Kites buddy system. When our youngest children join us in Reception, each child is paired with an older Red Kite buddy who helps them settle into school, find their way around and feel confident during those important first few days.

And, as we often discover, those first few days can become the beginning of friendships that last for years.

A place to explore

Our school grounds are an important part of life at Huby. We are fortunate to have extensive playing fields, outdoor play spaces, a wildlife garden and our own open-air heated swimming pool.

We want children to experience the world beyond the classroom — to explore, investigate, get active, notice the natural world and develop a sense of care and responsibility for their environment. 

Our outdoor spaces provide opportunities for play, physical activity, curiosity and discovery, while our wildlife garden helps children develop an appreciation of the natural world and their role within it. We also ensure that all children have access to Forest School through our external providers- Forest Quest. 

A place to learn

Our classrooms are lively places where children are encouraged to be curious, ask questions and make connections in their learning.

We provide children with access to a range of technology and digital resources, including Chromebooks, high-speed internet, visualisers and interactive teaching screens. These tools are used alongside rich experiences, practical learning, discussion, creativity and collaboration to help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the future.

We believe that technology should open up learning rather than replace the experiences that make childhood special. At Huby, children have opportunities to think, create, investigate, collaborate and discover.

A place to shine

Above all, Huby is a school where we want children to flourish.

Our vision, inspired by Jesus' words in Matthew 5:16 — “Let your light shine for all to see” — reminds us that every child has their own unique light.

Our role is to help them discover it.

We want our children to develop the courage to face challenges, the curiosity to keep learning and the connection to understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves.

We want them to leave Huby knowing who they are, understanding what they can achieve and believing that they can make a positive difference to the world around them.
