Young Leaders

Young Leaders has been running successfully at Huby for a number of years and continues to be a much-valued and enjoyable opportunity for our pupils. The programme is led by our Year 5 and 6 pupils, who take on an important role in supporting sport and physical activity for younger children across the school.

“The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas; it’s to create a culture where everyone can have ideas.”

Ken Robinson

What are Young Leaders?

The main focus of young leaders is to develop leadership skills by encouraging and supporting younger pupils during playtimes and lunchtimes. At the beginning of the year, the Red Kites (year 5 and 6) receive training and coaching in how to lead simple, fun and inclusive playground games. They then take responsibility for delivering these activities, ensuring that younger children are engaged, active and enjoying their break times.

Why?

Through this role, our Young Leaders develop confidence, communication and leadership skills as they support and engage younger children in play. They act as positive role models, demonstrating good behaviour, teamwork and fairness.

Overall, the Young Leaders programme helps our Year 5 and 6 pupils to take responsibility and grow as confident individuals, while also promoting a positive and active playtime environment across the school.
