Mathematics

At Huby Church of England (VC) Primary School, Mathematics enables children to develop the knowledge, understanding and confidence they need to make sense of the world around them. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, building on prior learning and ensuring that children develop secure mathematical understanding.

Our approach recognises the importance of moving through the concrete, pictorial and abstract stages of learning. Children have opportunities to explore mathematical concepts using practical resources and manipulatives before representing their understanding pictorially and, when ready, moving towards increasingly abstract mathematical thinking. This helps children to develop deep and lasting understanding rather than simply learning procedures.

Across the curriculum, children develop the three interconnected areas of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Fluency enables children to develop accuracy, efficiency and confidence with mathematical facts and procedures; reasoning encourages them to explain, justify and make connections; and problem solving enables them to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar and real-life situations.

Mathematics provides opportunities for children to let their light shine by developing their confidence, perseverance and willingness to explore different approaches. Through their learning, children develop Courage to tackle challenges and learn from mistakes, Connection by making links between mathematical ideas and working collaboratively, and Curiosity by asking questions, investigating patterns and exploring different ways to solve problems.

Our long-term plans and subject intent explain in more detail how Mathematics is taught at Huby and how our curriculum reflects our vision, values and commitment to helping every child flourish.
