Religious Education
At Huby Church of England (VC) Primary School, Religious Education enables children to explore and develop their understanding of Christianity and a range of other faiths and world views. As a Church of England school, RE plays an important role in our curriculum and supports children to reflect on questions of meaning, belief, identity, values and how people live their lives.
We follow a combination of the North Yorkshire Council Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and Understanding Christianity, ensuring that our curriculum provides a rich and progressive understanding of Christianity alongside opportunities to explore other faiths and world views. Through RE, children are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, consider different perspectives and develop respect and understanding for the beliefs and experiences of others.
To support children's understanding of the different dimensions of RE, we use three characters who represent key areas of learning:
-
Believing – Theology (Theo): exploring what people believe and the stories, teachings and traditions that shape their faith.
-
Expressing – Philosophy (Sophie): exploring questions, ideas and different ways of thinking about beliefs, meaning and life.
-
Living – Social Sciences (Sumil): exploring how beliefs influence the way people live, behave, worship and participate within their communities.
RE provides opportunities for children to let their light shine by developing their understanding of themselves, others and the wider world. Through their learning, children develop Courage to ask challenging questions and consider different viewpoints, Connection by understanding the beliefs and experiences of others, and Curiosity by exploring faith, belief, values and the big questions of life.
Our RE curriculum contributes significantly to children's spiritual development, encouraging them to reflect on their own beliefs and experiences, appreciate the beliefs of others and explore questions of meaning and purpose. Our long-term plans and subject intent explain in more detail how RE is taught at Huby and how our curriculum reflects our Christian vision, values and commitment to helping every child flourish.
